Friday, April 23, 2021 – The Louisiana Regular Legislative Session began on April 12, 2021, and will end on June 10, 2021. We are asking for your continued support to #PutHousingFirst and advocate for safe, affordable housing by submitting public comments in favor of Louisiana House Bill 143 (HB 143).
HB 143, sponsored by Representative Matthew Willard, would limit the amount of increase in the assessed value of residential property to no more than 10% from the previous year. This bill will protect properties from reappraisals or adjustments of millages and prevent further displacement of families in Orleans Parish.
WHEN: This bill will be heard on Monday, April 26, 2021, at 9:00 AM at the Ways and Means Committee Meeting.
WHERE: Public comments on House Bill 143 can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please make sure to include the name of the bill (HB 374) when submitting a comment. Statements received prior to 12:00 p.m., on Friday, April 23, 2021, will be distributed to the committee members prior to the meeting.
Sample Comment: “The current financial crisis created by COVID-19 has put a huge strain on our residents. Many who have housing are struggling to make payments. It is critical that we help residents stay in their homes. HB 143 would help regulate property taxes from making significant changes over a short period of time and prevent the displacement of families who cannot keep up. #PutHousingFirst by supporting a bill that combats gentrification and rising housing costs in Orleans Parish.”
