Thursday, April 22, 2021 – The Louisiana Regular Legislative Session began on April 12, 2021, and will end on June 10, 2021. We are calling on all housing advocates to #PutHousingFirst by submitting public comments in support of the Louisiana House Bill 374 (HB 374).
HB374 was introduced on April 1, 2021, and referred to the Commerce Committee. Introduced by Representative Royce Duplessis, this bill would change the residential lease screening process by allowing families to provide hardship statements to their credit files regarding disaster-related evictions and debts. This will help protect families from housing or job discrimination for financial difficulties created by disasters, including global pandemics.
WHEN: This bill will be heard on Monday, April 26, 2021, at 9:00 AM.
WHERE: Public comments on House Bill 374 can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please make sure to include the name of the bill (HB 374) when submitting a comment. Statements received prior to 5:00 p.m., on Friday, April 23, 2021, will be distributed to the committee members prior to the meeting.
Sample Comment: “The impact of the pandemic has created severe financial hardships for many Louisiana residents. Many continue to struggle to pay bills and are often faced with illegal evictions. I support HB 374, and in doing so, I am recognizing that we should protect families against discrimination from disaster-related evictions during this difficult time. #PutHousingFirst!”
