On Thursday, January 28, at 10:00 AM, the New Orleans City Council will vote on legislative zoning docket No.83/20 – City Council Motion No. M-20-279. This zoning docket requests a text amendment to the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance to clarify and amend the definitions and uses of “Dwelling, Established Multi-Family” and “Dwelling Established Two Family.”
This text amendment had been previously stalled by a reluctant City Council. A lack of support for this amendment has stalled the creation of naturally occurring affordable housing. Existing fourplexes owned by small- scale landlords should not be sitting vacant while many people lack viable housing options.
We are asking New Orleans residents to call on the council to #PutHousingFirst and submit public comments in support of Zoning Docket 083-20.
WHEN: Thursday, January 28, at 10:00 AM
SAMPLE COMMENT: In the midst of a pandemic the residents of New Orleans are facing the financial burden of this city. We support this zoning docket as a way to expand housing in this city. Once again we encourage you to explore affordable housing opportunities by moving to establish and expand fourplexes in New Orleans. Allowing historic four-plexes to be restored is a simple and critical tool to allow displaced residents to return to their neighborhoods. It is also crucial to undoing the racist foundation our current housing system is based. We encourage public officials to #PutHousingFirst by seeking ways to create and sustain affordable housing.
